The ancient Chinese zodiac associates twelve animals to years on the astrological calendar. It’s believed that each person’s year of birth gives them the personality attributes of the animal tied to that year. The birth years for the Year of the Ox include 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, and 2021. People born in these years are said to be patient, diligent, determined, dependable, honest, and patriotic.
Like many Perth coins, the obverse features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA” are inscribed around the rim, along with the denomination, year of issue, weight, and purity.
The reverse design for the Year of the Ox features an ox and her calf standing before grassy hills. Above, you’ll see the Chinese character for ox. The oxen, along with their patch of grass, are seen in brilliant colorized detail. This side also includes an inscription of “YEAR OF THE OX,” along with a “P” mintmark.
