"Aegyptos – The Province of Egypt" Between 119 and 136 CE, Hadrian traveled extensively throughout the Roman Empire, visiting the provinces to reflect on his legacy and quell unrest that had arisen toward the end of Trajan’s reign. His first expedition, around 119 CE, aimed to strengthen Rome’s northern borders. His second journey began in 128 CE when he embarked on a short tour of the provinces of Africa and Mauretania.
In 130 CE, Hadrian ventured to Egypt, where he visited Alexandria. During this journey, his beloved companion, Antinous, mysteriously drowned in the Nile. The Bar-Kokhba revolt in Judea forced Hadrian to remain in the region until 135 CE. In 136 CE, Hadrian returned to Italy, bringing his extensive travels to an end.
