Marcus Aurelius Claudius
"Victoriae Gothic – Conqueror of the Goths" A soldier-emperor from Illyricum, who rose to the throne after the death of Gallienus. His short reign left a golden mark on Roman history. He ended the usurpation of Aureolus, defeated the Alamanni, and earned lasting fame by crushing the Goths, earning the epithet Gothicus. He was the first emperor in many years to die a natural death.
The entourage of Emperor Constantine later sought to trace their princeps' lineage back to him. The decisive battle against the barbarian Goths was fought near Naissus in Upper Moesia. Roman forces, led by the emperor and outnumbered by their opponents, annihilated the Goths. Fifty thousand barbarian corpses were left on the battlefield. A denarius commemorates this great victory.
