Marcus Claudius Tacitus

"Descendant of Tacitus" He hailed from Interamna in central Italy and belonged to a senatorial family; among his ancestors was said to be the historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus. His half-brother was Florianus, his direct successor. As a ruler, he focused on meeting the needs of the army, particularly through the regular payment of wages, for which he even allocated part of his private fortune.

Propaganda slogans on coins (Conservator Militum, Concordia Militum, Fides Militum) emphasized his role as a protector of soldiers. He exemplified modesty and frugality and stood against the violation of decent morals. A connoisseur of art and a student of history, he ordered the copying of Tacitus's works, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
