CENTRAL GAUL - SEQUANI

"I would rather be first here than second in Rome (J. Caesar)" The Sequani were a Gallic tribe inhabiting the upper basin of the Arar River (Saône), the Doubs Valley, and the Jura Mountains. Before Caesar's arrival in Gaul, they sided with the Arverni against their rivals, the Aedui, and sought the support of the Germanic Suebi tribe led by Ariovistus (71 BCE).

Ariovistus's assistance allowed them to defeat the Aedui, but in return, he seized a third of their territory. The Sequani then appealed to Caesar, who drove out the Germanic tribes (58 BCE). However, Caesar compelled the Sequani to return the lands they had taken from the Aedui.

This humiliation led the Sequani to join Vercingetorix's rebellion against Caesar in 52 BCE.
