Ostrogothic Italy, Theoderic (493-526). AV Tremissis. Pseudo-Imperial Coinage. In the name of Anastasius I. Rome mint, c. 491-518 AD. Obv. DN ANASTA – SIVS PF AVG. Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. VICTORIA AVGVSTORVMT. Victory advancing right with bust three-quarters left, holding wreath in right hand and globus cruciger in left; in right and left fields, stars; in exergue, COMOB. COI 13a; BMC Vandals 67; MIB I, 11; MEC I, -. AV. 1.47 g. 14 mm. RR. Rare and beautiful. Scratch on obverse, otherwise. good EF.
The T at the end of the obverse legend refers to Theoderic. This means that the coin was minted before the agreement between Anastasius and Theodric in 497, which led to the removal of all references to the Gothic king on gold coins. There are reportedly only 5 specimens known, of which only 2 are outside public collections.
