Probus Coins

Apparenly unique

This coin is higly attractive for at least four reasons. First, it has a very rare and desirable consular bust RIGHT instead of left as usual. Second, the reverse has the Γ mintmark, without the usual monetary reform KA mark and was struck during the very brief issue 3.1. Third, it's apparantly unique! Fourth, this particular coin is listed on probuscoins.fr (biggest online Probus database in the world) and is the only example of this type known!

Sol was the favorite and most frequently depicted God of the Roman pantheon in Probus' coinage. There are numerous variants of reverses with Sol; however the depiction of Sol in quadriga (left or central/spread) remains undoubtedly an iconic, classis reverse for Probus . This reverse type was struck in Lugdunum, Rome, Ticinum, Siscia, Serdica and Kyzikos mints, with each mint having its unique style.
