Collector and expert for roman coinage

Crawford 287/1, Anonym denarius, 115 or 114 BC, Rome

Obverse: Roma bust with Corinthian helmet, behind , below ROMA

Reverse: Roma with spear sitting on two shields, below helmet, she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus at her feet. On either side, bird flying.

The birds may be woodpeckers which were Augurial birds and helped on the rescue of Romulus and Remus. Grueber suggests the birds may represent a raven and a crow, which were also amongst those consulted by the auguries.
