Quinarius (unidentified mint in southeastern Italy, c.211-210 BC)
O/ Helmeted head of Roma r., V behind head.
R/ The Dioscuri r., H below, ROMA in ex.
1.8g; 14mm
Crawford 85/1a (40 obverse dies/50 reverse dies, all varieties)
Anonymous (H series):
This quinarius was minted during the Second Punic War, in an unidentified mint in southeastern Italy. Ancient scholars such as Gennaro Riccio in 1855 and Theodor Mommsen in 1860 respectively attributed the H series to the mint of Herdonea and Hatria, and both hypotheses have since been reused by subsequent scholars.
A H denarius was also produced, but Crawford incorrectly dismissed it as false, see: Richard Witschonke, The Numismatic Chronicle (1966-), Vol. 168 (2008), pp. 141-144.
Witschonke also had a unique sestertius of the H series in his collection (NAC 61, lot 358).
