MN.FONTEI C.F Denarius
Rome, 85 BC
Avers: Apollo with laurel wreath, below lightning bolt, behind MN FONTEI C F, in front monogram AP
Revers: Cupid on goat (Amalthea), in section Thyrsus, left and right dioscure hads (pilei). All in wreath.
Because of the monogram AP (not completely visible on this coin), the head on the obverse is probably to be interpreted as Apollo. On the other hand, the lightning bolt underneath shows a clear indication of Vejovis, the young Jupiter. Near the Vejovis temple in Rome stood a sculpture that can be seen on the revers depicting the little Jupiter's mammal through the goat Amalthea.
