This is the last coin Postumus, founder of the gallic empire, ever issued, minted in Treveri (Trier) in the beginning of 269 AC. The Antoninianii of Postumus in his late reign had usually a low to no silver contend and the dies get long in use. The revers inscription PACATOR ORBIS (Peacebringer for the world), should probably express the hope on a quickly quashing of the usurpation of Ulpius Cornelius Laelianus in Mogontiacum (Mainz). Though this happened fast, but apparently, Postumus then refused to allow his troups to plunder Mainz and was therefore unfortunately killed. Marius became the new shortlife emperor. The decline of the gallic empire was sealed although two more successors followed.
Provenance Savoca coins, 24th Silver Auction, July 2018.
