Neapolis, very old creation was first founded by colonists from Rhodes under the name of Parthenope in the eighth century BC The city was then colonized by the people of Cumae a century later. In the fifth century BC under the leadership of chalcidoid and Athenian colonists, the city took its final name of Neapolis (Naples). The Samnites finally invade Campania and occupy the citadel of Naples for over fifty years. Finally the Romans took possession of Naples in the third century BC The city remained nevertheless Hellenized and maintained its independence until 241 BC.
