The flower, Bauhinia blakeana, is named after Sir Henry Blake, Hong Kong's governor from 1898 to 1903, who had a strong interest in botany. The flower can grow up to 8 meters tall and flowers in late winter or early spring. It is sometimes called the Hong Kong orchid tree and appears on Hong Kong's flag.
