Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus
"Roma Aeternae" In 260 CE, Gallienus issued an edict of tolerance, ending the persecution of Christians. The edict granted clergy the right to preach the word of God and to maintain their own cemeteries. This decision came as a significant surprise to Christians, who had expected Gallienus to continue the policies of his father, who had issued two edicts ordering their persecution.
By issuing these decrees, Gallienus sought to ease societal hostility toward Christians and to attract Christian recruits to the army. Gallienus also asserted that religious beliefs could not be imposed by force.
