coins ancient to romans imperial and republican trajan 98 117

Caesar Nerva Traianus Augustus

"Divus Pater Traianus" The reverse of this denarius commemorates the deceased father of Trajan, Marcus Ulpius Traianus. Trajan Pater had an impressive career under the Flavians, serving as legate of Legio X Fretensis during the Jewish War from 67–70 CE, as consul suffectus in 72 CE, and as governor of Cappadocia and Galatia. In 73–74 CE, he was elevated to the rank of patrician by Vespasian before becoming governor of Syria (circa 73/4–75/6 CE), proconsul of Asia, and governor of Hispania Baetica.

It is widely accepted that the emperor Trajan's father passed away before his son ascended the throne in 98 CE and was ultimately deified as Divus Traianus Pater in 112/3 CE, as evidenced by this coin.
